The New Gettysburg Address

954840_10201130282290214_947914457_n“Twelvescore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men and women were arguably equal. Well that is out the window. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war: your 401K , Social Security and never ending debt. We have come to dedicate a portion to those whose struggle against oppression and racism, simply making ends meet, to eat and to keep their homes is a constant burden, with realization that without justice that this household might not live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this notion because the corporate owned government has decreed against it. The brave citizens, living and dead who struggled with Occupy, in Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Spain, Turkey, and elsewhere have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The media will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us–that from these honored citizens we take increased defiance against the injustice for which they gave the last full measure of devotion–that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, though now this nation remains under Greed and oppression but shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the corporations and banks, by their profits, over the people shall soon perish from the earth.”

Caution: Explicit language. Thoughts on the Chik-fil-A gunman

Being a dick has consequences. I am not condoning the actions of the gunman who walked into the offices of the Rightwing Family Research Council in Washington DC, yesterday and wounded a security guard. To the contrary. His actions will run him in all likelihood, a good long stint in prison. And it should. But, as with everything, this did not take place in a vacuum.  FOX’s Mike Huckabee, and every other dick in the Rightwing media deserves blame as well for promoting this issue to the national stage and treating it like it was some sort of highschool basketball game or a vital patriotic cause, rather than a monthlong commercial for a large contributor to causes that directly affect the human rights and dignity of others. Have your views on homosexuality, but by flaunting it, using it as a political grindstone and cheering on a media campaign (FOX, Hugh Hewitt and others were giving hourly updates on lines) in the face of someone as a means of shaming them and stomping their dignity into the ground are the action of dicks.

And now, because of this troubled fool in Washington, the Right is blaming an off-the-cuff remark by Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel. It was a stunt by former Arkansas governor turned smarmy talkshow dick on FOX, Mike Huckabee that saw an opportunity to exalt the meaningless stories into national assaults against minorities, the middle class and the Obama presidency. Huckabee, the uber-patriot, who celebrates friendships with dicks like Ted Nugent, who defecated in his pants to avoid the Vietnam draft, decried the so-called afront to Chik-fil-a’s rights when Chicago citizens, borrowing a page from the “community standards”  tactic chafed at the idea that Chik-fil-a, whose owner, Dan Cathy, didn’t simply express a disdain for Gay marriage, but actively funds causes against it, was welcome in a diverse community like Chicago. The Right quickly jumped on the bandwagon in a circus-like, fuck you sort of hate orgy. It was used as a political bludgeon, inflating a quick sound-bite into more hate celebration on the Right.

In a joint statement yesterday, thirty-four gay rights condemned the shooting:

“We were saddened to hear news of the shooting this morning at the offices of the Family Research Council. Our hearts go out to the shooting victim, his family, and his co-workers. The motivation and circumstances behind today’s tragedy are still unknown, but regardless of what emerges as the reason for this shooting, we utterly reject and condemn such violence. We wish for a swift and complete recovery for the victim of this terrible incident.”

Is anyone surprised that some unstable character was incited by the blatant and open actions of assholes? But am I being a hypocrite when nut-wings on the Right attack and assail, and gun down people championing issues on the Left? Like gay marriage? Let’s say religious zealots becoming enraged that blacks or gays or some other minority group in the country asserted their rights, or had one them?

Therein lies the difference. No gay person wanting to marry the person he or she loves in any way impune the rights of Mike Huckabee, or anyone in the falsely named Family Research Council. All that is threatened is their power to  restrict the fairly demanded rights of others, and perhaps their right to be a dick. But their right to be a dick is their own, and the rest of us don’t have to stand for it.

The Punk tactics of the Right Exposed

Recently I had a conversation with a blogger on the Right. What seemed innocuous enough turned out to be  far stranger, and underscrored the aggression all too prevalent on the Right, whether it be the unhealthy and paranoic exaltation of  a gun and violence culture, to rationalizing and excusing abhorrent behavior during wartime-something which far too few of them have actually experienced.

I knew I was being baited by this blogger. At one point he questioned my credentials. Fair enough. It is too easy to blather out an opinion. Some vetting of the people making those opinions is more than fair. Interesting that when I replied and offered my experience and credentials, he was suddenly incredulous.

What was at the core of this back and forth was an assertion that Hitler and the Nazis were Leftists, which is a fairly recent effort on the far Right to reframe a well established historical fact, one even admitted to by the Nazis themselves. There is on the Right a significant effort to reframe history to justify their positions, which is a dangerous thing. History proves nothing, except to serve as a mile post to our earlier ignorance. Only propagandists make use of history as a justification for anything. Mass graves around the planet are filled with the proof of such justifications.

Now I have spent the better part of 20 years studying  Genocide and nationalist movements. There is no better documented case of genocide than the Holocaust against the Jews in Europe. There is no greater example of what happens when a  ambitious self-aggrandizing cabal vaults a sociopathic personality to power as a means of manipulating and controlling a willing or gulliblly nationalist-oriented population. I have interviewed former Nazis and their victims alike.

Offered as evidence to my blogger counterpart on the Right was  almost a dozen books, both historical and contemporary showing clearly that there is no debate regarding the ideological orientation of the Nazis, except among propagandists. these alone came from my personal library. the citings were readily dismissed. The rebuttal, of course was the familiar refrain all too often used on FOX and in the Rightwing media when no one legitimate can be found for an opinion: “Some say.”

I am happy for debate, but for factual and substantive debate. I know in myself that when I become frustrated that I have reached the end of my own logic and knowledge. What I wasn’t expecting, after offering the blogger the final word was the e-tantrum waiting me in my email. What I found was a bizarre attempt not to “hold the Left accountable,” as this person told his own readers, but instead, which his readers never saw, was an effort to harrass and perhaps intimidate. I was greated with a flood of emails, as can be seen below.

What it highlights is that arguments on the Right are anger, ignorance and fear based. When confronted with the inconsistency or hypocrisy of their positions they turn all too often to tactics that amount to a tantrum. Perhaps that’s why they assign greater value to the second amendment that to the first. Could be why rather than wage a civil election their effort is to disenfranchise voters, dredge up antiquated terms like communist, rewrite history and tease the racial issue regarding President Obama. Sad. Too sad.
