Residents Protest Maryville TIF Proposal

WHAT: Protest against $36 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Funds going to private developer JDL to build 860 units of mostly high-income rental units. Residents plan to demonstrate at the 46th Ward Zoning and Development Committee Meeting.

WHO: Uptown residents, members of Northside Action for Justice, Uptown Uprising, Service Employees International Union Local 73, Alliance for Community Services, Coalition of the Willing (COW), and others

WHEN & WHERE: Monday, April 22, 7:00pm at Weiss Memorial Hospital, 4646 N. Marine Drive

WHY: The Maryville TIF proposal is the latest example of TIF Funds being used as a slush fund for private developers, at the expense of public schools, parks, and city and county services. 77% of Uptown voters said ‘YES’ to the March 2012 referendum calling for TIF funds to be reinvested back into such services and future TIF dollars only used for affordable housing, living wage jobs, and positive economic development.

The 46th Ward Zoning and Development Committee does not accurately represent the diversity of the neighborhood, a concern which residents will raise at the meeting.
