ILLINOISANS RALLY FOR A MORATORIUM ON FRACKING

Chicago, IL – Concerned citizens will be rallying at the State of
Illinois building on Friday, March 22nd to call for a moratorium on
horizontal hydraulic fracturing or fracking, a controversial method
for obtaining oil and gas. Fracking involves injecting large amounts
of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to fracture shale to
release gas and oil. This practice has caused water and air
contamination in other states. Environmental organizations will hold
a rally with speakers at the State of Illinois Building. The event is
being organized by Rising Tide Chicago and is supported by Nuclear
Energy Information Service (NEIS), Stop the Frack Attack on Illinois,
and the Illinois Coalition for a Moratorium on Fracking, whose members
will be speaking at the event. Event attendees will be encouraged to
contact lawmakers to request a moratorium on fracking and to volunteer
with organizations fighting fracking in Illinois. They will also
participate in the symbolic action of surrounding a portion of the
Thompson Center with a piece of giant caution tape to represent how
allowing fracking in Illinois will turn Southern Illinois into a toxic
mess. Event organizers and attendees will be encouraging lawmakers to
promote clean energy rather than polluting fracking for natural gas
and oil.
