Glenn Beck, Serbia awaits your wisdom

There is a word for people like this, they are called rubes. Another word would be idiot, bonehead, schmuck, imbecile, dufus, hick, and here’s what I mean.

On today’s Glenn Beck show some well-meaning but dumb as a brick caller wanted to organize disaster relief to American victims of disasters. This is on the heels of the terrible storm outbreak this week that left a swath of destruction and more than three hundred dead across the south. They guy wanted to organize citizen soldiers, so to speak, that ould rush to disaster sights ith water Glenn Beck tee shirts and supplies, because we all know the government  can’t do anything right, and the barely-finished-high school tea partiers really know what’s best. Charity begins at home, but if it comes from the government it is welfare and welfare bad-very bad. So let’s all raid the closet and cupboard and tail gate it to the carnage. Sounds, in your gut like a good and merciful idea, right?

But here is where Beck’s message about individual charity replacing government programs becomes dangerous. I saw this before, where government was a weak force, focused on war but ineffective for internal organization: Yugoslavia during the break up in the mid 1990s. I saw it first hand. I lived it firsthand.

Beck and other Rightwingers would hav us all filling our trunks and wagon-training ad hoc supplies into disaster areas, clogging roads, interferring with emergency services and assuming some greater authority should government emergency services challenge their Glenn Beck given authority. By that measure, throw in some good ole boy ranchhands that turned a fowl at birth. Maybe they could offer medical attention to the sick and injured-by golly!

The supreme and top-scale emergency services in this nation, Fire, Police…are the best in the world for a reason. Not only do we place a premium on safety, but more important, and perhaps fundamental to safety is organization, and the government: State, local and Federal in this country has the greatest emrgency response network on the planet. God forbid that was privatized so that only some communities could recieve adequate response, or that a parade of well meaning but ignorant clowns fell upon a broken community, and with no oversight, what other opportunists would show up, from those selling water and food at criminal prices, to looters and thieves.

I saw all of this first hand in Serbia and other Eastern block countries right after the Wall came down, in which a corruption weakened government was at the mercy of this brain-dead ah hoc, fly by the seat of your pants, not foresight stupidity.

Lest you think this is a case for bigger government, it is not. I have always believed in effective government with adequate oversight. Complaining about big government is a fraud. Government should be at the service of its citizens, and neither a victim or victimizing.

Glenn Beck is not only an idiot, he is a dangerous idiot. The people who listen to him and take his ridiculously backwards foolishness seriously are equally dangerous and need to be told to shut up and sit down as we have given these vapid slack-jawed rubes enough time and attention already, The rest of us have a country to run and a future to be brightened through planning, organization and maturity, by people who read books and not by mopes who need to sound out the syllables when signing their name!

It seems that Americans are beginning to learn. Bill this type of writing is vital to continue their education. Some will never learn but they can be marginalized and contained so they do no harm.
